It is normal to gain weight during pregnancy. On average, a woman gains 25 to 35 pounds when pregnant. Most of this weight will be lost after giving birth, but some body fat will need to be worked off. Getting your pre-pregnancy figure back may be the last thing on your mind now that you have a baby and are busy with feedings and diaper changes. But once you have settled in, you will want to work on losing the extra pounds you gained during pregnancy.
Here is how you can shed weight:
1. Consider breastfeeding your baby. Moms who breastfeed their babies burn more calories and lose baby weight more quickly. A woman who breastfeeds her baby needs an extra 500 calories a day.
2. Start doing exercises. Talk with your physician and learn when you can begin. If you are healthy and had an ordinary delivery, you’ll be allowed to start exercising after 4 to 6 weeks. Mothers who gave birth by cesarean section may have to wait for 8 weeks before they can start.
3. Set a weight loss goal and be realistic. Aim for one to two pounds a week. Check your weight once a week and record your progress.
4. Eat healthy foods. Avoid fast foods and eat more lean proteins, fruits and vegetables. This will be relevant especially should you be breastfeeding.
5. Snack on fruits as opposed to cookies and potato chips. Keep healthy food that you could grab if you hunger for treats.
6. Let newborn join your workouts. It’s easier to lose baby pounds if you take your little darling along with you. Many fitness centers provide mom and baby physical fitness classes featuring activities that you could perform together with your baby.
7. Find a workout buddy who can help you stay motivated. Another new mom who is also trying to lose baby weight can help you stay on track and you can cheer each other on.
