When there is cervical fluid which has the look and consistency of eggwhites, this is the indicator of the fertile time. The eggwhite fluid tells you that you are ovulating, but some women have trouble determining what to look for, so another indicator is the wettest type of fluid, of a wet sensation. The best time to conceive is the last day that there is the eggwhite mucus present.

Couples (with normal sperm count) need to have intercourse every day when the eggwhite mucus comes and to do so until a rise in temperature is noted, which will mean that the fertile window is closed. Men with low sperm counts must only have sex every second day during this time, and stop on the morning the basal temperature rises.

Prior to keeping a record of the cervical fluid, you must know what it is you are looking for as the cervical mucus changes greatly in colour, consistency as well as volume. By recording the changes you can really increase the likelihood of getting pregnant.

Ovulation is the best time to conceive, and this is the time of the month when there is a high volume of cervical fluid. The mucus that comes with ovulation (as noted already) is eggwhite mucus which is very fertile stuff, and prime baby making material!

It is only a matter of seconds after the egg is released from the ovarian wall that the fimbria, or the tip of the fallopian tube will pick the egg up and draw it into the tube properly. If an egg remains unfertilised it can live for up to twenty four hours, and after dying it will be absorbed by the body or it will disintegrate and come out with the menses. When an ovum is fertilised, this usually takes place within a short time after ovulation occurs, and will actually be done in the fallopian tube. Contrary to popular belief, fertilisation does not take place in the uterus. It can take even a couple of hours for the sperm to reach the egg in the fallopian tubes. The egg gets to the uterus after fertilisation by the help of little vibrating cilia, kind of like tiny hairs which line the inside of the fallopian tubes. After a journey of around a week, the egg will reach the uterine lining, where it will finally begin the task of burying itself in the nutrient-rich lining.

If you are having a problem getting pregnant, it is important to remember that conception requires three things to take place: the sperm, the egg and most importantly a conduit for the egg and sperm to travel safely in the hostile vaginal environment.

It is this cervical mucus that is the safe passage of the sperm into the cervix and the waiting egg. When a fertilised egg burrows into the lining of the uterus, the body starts producing a hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) which prevents this from happening. This hormone sends a message directly to the corpus luteum (fancy for the lining of the uterus) and tells it to keep on kicking for a while longer. The corpus luteum will continue to maintain itself for a couple of months till the placenta is ready to take over and the placenta will then maintain the lining as well as provide oxygen and nourishment to the growing foetus.

If you have ever received a false negative pregnancy test then it is because the test has been done too soon – these tests measure HCG in the blood or urine, and as it can sometimes take so long for an egg to burrow and start releasing the hormone, then the test will come back negative. If a woman is charting her cycle, and even charting her cervical fluids, then these kind of false-negative results are unlikely to occur, because she will know the rhythm of ovulation, and therefore will know more accurately when implantation has occurred.

Your body weight can influence your hormones which in turn affect your ability to conceive. Then, if a baby is conceived, some women may not be able to provide sufficient nutrients to support a growing life.

2. The other major issue is with the ovaries and uterus. In the ovaries you can have problems like Poly Cystic Ovaries (PCO), twisted ovaries or fibroids. And then in the uterus, one of the most common causes of fertility issues is with endometriosis. This can cause further complications such as low progesterone count, diminished ovarian reserve and other ovulation disorders. It’s just my luck that I have both these issues to deal with, I’m overweight and have a long history of endometriosis.

Men are not off the hook though. They too can suffer from infertility issues such as low sperm count and sperm motility, an STD, sperm blockages or an injury or disease. Also there are factors that affect both men and women. Factors like too much caffeine or alcohol, smoking, stress or not enough vitamins in the diet.

So that’s quite a few factors affecting our fertility. Rather than just trying to deal with one issue after another, my husband and I have decided to take a holistic approach to trying to get pregnant. We will look after our whole body and get it as healthy as we can to give ourselves the best chances of getting pregnant after 35.
